Service Description: Works with the residents of Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes to help prevent illness, protect against disease and promote healthy lifestyles

Health Unit staff provide:
  • information, guidance and support on a variety of public health issues, including nutrition, substance use, injury prevention, physical activity, tobacco use prevention, and heart health
  • ensuring healthy communities through the testing and monitoring of water quality, inspection of food premises, investigation of environmental hazards and the follow-up of animal bites
  • prevention of the spread of communicable diseases through immunization, infection control programs, outbreak management, and the follow-up of animal bites
  • Sexual Health clinics for area residents, including confidential counselling, pregnancy testing, free condoms, low-cost birth control, cervical cancer screening (HPV testing), and the testing/treatment/teaching about sexually transmitted infections
  • offers free preventive dental services, dental examinations for preschool and elementary school students, and information about financial-support programs that cover the costs of dental care
  • provides education and resources on reproductive health and preschool speech and language development
  • provides education and support to pregnant women, new mothers and their babies through the provincial Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Program
