Ontario Expanding Uxbridge Hospital and Adding New Long-Term Care Home

The Ontario government is investing an additional $8.9 million to support the redevelopment and expansion of Oak Valley Health’s Uxbridge Hospital site, connecting more people in Uxbridge and across Durham Region to world-class care close to home. In addition, the expansion at Oak Valley Health – Uxbridge will include a brand new 192-bed long-term care home co-located on the hospital campus, ensuring seniors in the community can receive the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve.

“Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario’s health-care system, ensuring people of all ages can connect to the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This investment to support early works construction at Oak Valley Health – Uxbridge is an important milestone in the hospital’s redevelopment and will ensure families in Uxbridge can continue to access world-class care in their community for generations to come.”

This new funding will allow Oak Valley Health to begin early works activities to ready the site for the creation of a larger, state-of-the-art space to expand services and ensure the hospital can continue to meet the needs of Uxbridge’s growing community. The next stage of the project includes the construction of the east portion of the north service road, the building of a retaining wall and re-grading work.

“This additional $8.9 million investment marks an important step forward in the Uxbridge Hospital and Long-Term Care Home development,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Member of Provincial Parliament for Pickering—Uxbridge. “It brings us closer to a modern, expanded hospital that will connect more people in Uxbridge to high-quality care, in their own community.”

Once completed, Oak Valley Health – Uxbridge will be transformed into a connected campus of care that will bring health-care and community health providers together through three facilities – the new hospital and long-term care home, as well as an ambulatory care building to reduce wait times and increase access to integrated, high-quality care in the region.

Upgrades at the hospital will include:
  • Increased patient capacity, with the addition of up to 11 new beds, bringing the total number of beds at the hospital to 31.
  • Expansion of key services, including diagnostic imaging, cardiorespiratory services, and laboratory and pharmacy services.
  • Increased access to inpatient, emergency and ambulatory services.

“The new campus of care at Oak Valley will help deliver a continuum of care for residents in Uxbridge,” said Paul Calandra, acting Minister of Long-Term Care. “The inclusion of a new long-term care home is an important component of this project and will provide local seniors with the care they need for generations to come.”

As a next step, the government is working with Oak Valley Health and Infrastructure Ontario to issue the Request for Proposals to tender this project. Through Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is expanding and modernizing Ontario’s hospitals, making it faster and easier for people of all ages to connect to the high-quality care they need, where and when they need it.
